Broadcom Inc’s (NASDAQ:AVGO) post-earnings sell-off may have disappointed shareholders, but it highlighted a bigger story brewing across the artificial intelligence ecosystem.

The earnings commentary highlighted the growing importance of custom AI chips, or application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs), in the next phase of AI infrastructure spending.

Broadcom’s projection that AI semiconductor revenue will cross $100 billion by fiscal 2027 is strengthening the investment case for semiconductor ETFs with significant exposure to the chipmaker, as rising demand for ASICs from hyperscalers brings a new touch to interest around AI infrastructure.

“Despite the miss today, AVGO forecasts semiconductor revenue to grow over 200% year over year. While the name is being punished post-market, it is hard not to see a bullish path forward,” said Ryan Lee, Direxion's senior vice president of Product and Strategy.

Shares of Broadcom fell about 15% in premarket trading on Thursday after the semiconductor giant projected third-quarter AI semiconductor revenue of $16 billion, below Wall Street expectations of $17.2 billion. While the company topped earnings estimates and raised overall revenue guidance, investors appeared underwhelmed by management’s decision to reiterate, rather than increase, its long-term AI outlook.

Broadcom reported second-quarter revenue of $22.19 billion, slightly ahead of consensus estimates of $22.13 billion, while adjusted earnings per share of $2.44 topped expectations of $2.39. AI semiconductor revenue surged 143% year over year during the quarter. The company expects total third-quarter revenue of $29.4 billion, above analyst forecasts of $28.61 billion.

Gold prices are testing one of the most closely watched levels in technical analysis: the 200-day moving average.

After a blistering rally that carried bullion to record highs at $5,600 earlier this year, the metal has spent recent weeks consolidating and is now hovering directly above its long-term trend line.

For many traders, a break below the 200-day moving average is viewed as a bearish signal. Recent history suggests the opposite may be true for gold.

Gold’s Previous 200-Day Average Breakdowns Became Buying Opportunities

Spot gold – tracked by SPDR Gold Shares (NYSE:GLD) – changed hands near $4,500 per ounce on Wednesday, up roughly 1.5% on the day, after a multi-week pullback dragged it back down toward its rising 200-day average near $4,397.

The metal sits about 20% off the early-February peak above $5,600.

Data compiled from the last 10 occasions when gold fell below its 200-day moving average show that weakness has historically been followed by strong longer-term gains.

June has historically been a modest month for stocks. But when it arrives during the second year of a U.S. presidential cycle, Bank of America says investors should brace for a much more defensive market backdrop.

In a note shared with clients this week, technical strategist Paul Ciana found that June in Year 2 of the presidential cycle — the same setup investors face in 2026 under President Donald Trump‘s second term — has historically favored the U.S. dollar, flatter Treasury curves, stronger oil prices and weaker precious metals, while equities struggled.

“June in year 2 of the US Presidential Cycle carried a defensive tone,” Ciana said.

U.S. stock futures declined on Thursday after a lower close on Wednesday, as the Nasdaq 100, Dow Jones and S&P 500 fell.

Weekly initial jobless claims jumped by 13,000 to a seasonally adjusted 225,000 for the week ending May 30. Meanwhile, the government downwardly revised its reading on first-quarter nonfarm labor productivity to a marginal 0.3% annualized growth rate—down from the previously reported 0.8%—while unit labor costs rose at a 1.8% clip.

In a 215-208 vote, the Republican-controlled House passed a war powers resolution requiring President Donald Trump to obtain congressional authorization before continuing military action or deploying troops against Iran. Notably, four Republicans joined Democrats to pass the measure, marking a rare bipartisan challenge to the president’s military authority.

Meanwhile, the 10-year Treasury bond yielded 4.49%, and the two-year bond was at 4.07%. The CME Group's FedWatch tool‘s projections show markets pricing a 96.2% likelihood of the Federal Reserve leaving the current interest rates unchanged during June’s meeting.

S&P 500, Nasdaq 100 Drop From Records As Rate-Hike Bets Build, Oil Climbs: Stock Market Today

U.S. stocks retreated from record highs at midday Wednesday as hotter-than-expected economic data and a renewed surge in Treasury yields revived fears the Federal Reserve could soon raise interest rates.

The S&P 500 fell 0.6% to around 7,568, putting a nine-session winning streak in jeopardy. A late-day rebound back into positive territory would instead stretch the run to 10 days, its longest since 1995.

Treasuries Sold Off Sharply

The yield on the 10-year note climbed about 6 basis points to 4.50%, the 2-year rose to 4.10%, and the 30-year held at 5.00%.

The move followed ADP data showing the private sector added 122,000 jobs in May, above forecasts and the strongest reading since January 2025, alongside a stronger-than-expected ISM Services index at 54.5 and a 4.8% jump in factory orders.

The Nasdaq 100 dipped 0.5% to about 30,513 as the rise in yields hammered the largest growth names. Within Magnificent Seven stocks, Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT) fell 3.4%, Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:NVDA) dropped 3.0% and Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) lost 2.4%.

The small-cap Russell 2000 underperformed, falling 1.2%.

Meanwhile, the latest Iranian strikes and a sharp drop in U.S. crude inventories lifted oil for a third straight session.

West Texas Intermediate crude rose 2.5% to trade above $96 a barrel, while Brent climbed 2.0% toward $98, extending a third consecutive daily advance after government data showed U.S. crude inventories fell by roughly 8 million barrels last week, far more than expected.

Gold pulled back from recent strength, sliding 1.1% to about $4,440 an ounce as the stronger dollar and rising real yields sapped demand, dragging the SPDR Gold Shares (NYSE:GLD) lower. Silver fell 2.3%.

Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) fell for the fourth straight session to $65,900, reaching lows last seen in late March.
