Companies Are Cashing In On Consumers' Unwillingness To Bargain Shop

Sentiment surveys confirm that consumers are very aware of rising prices, and they are complaining about them. People hate inflation.

Interestingly, inflation hasn't really stopped people from spending. Economic data confirm this.

This contradiction helps explain why, despite poor vibes, the economy continues to grow, profit margins continue to expand, and corporate earnings continue to rise.

A recent research note from Goldman Sachs highlights studies reflecting these trends.

First, they cite two studies (this and this) that provide evidence companies have been increasing price markups on the stuff they sell. This evidence is in line with data showing gross profit margins have been expanding.

"After-tax corporate profits as a share of value added have roughly doubled from about 5% in the late 1980s to over 10% recently," Goldman economists wrote. "Over the same period, U.S. firms have substantially raised markups — the amount by which prices exceed the marginal cost of producing goods and services."

At least some of this trend toward rising markups over the years can be explained by falling costs. Regardless, the point is that what customers are paying increasingly covers much more than the costs.

U.S. stock futures rose on Tuesday, as the Nasdaq 100, S&P 500, and the Dow Jones indices gained, following Monday’s mixed close.

President Donald Trump expressed confidence in a swift conclusion to the ongoing war with Iran, and stated that the negotiating parties are on the verge of finalizing a "very, very good deal" aimed at prohibiting nuclear weapons. He told reporters that a deal could be struck in "two or three days," with the reopening of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz to follow "immediately."

Separately, investor sentiment was supported by the official April U.S. international trade report, which revealed the overall goods and services deficit ticked down slightly by 1.2% to $55.9 billion, down from $56.6 billion in March. The narrowing gap came as total exports surged 2.6% to a record-breaking $327.1 billion, completely overshadowing a 2.0% increase in imports.

This trade resilience helped counter a more downbeat reading from the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB). The NFIB Small Business Optimism Index dipped 0.6 points to 95.3 in May.h.

Meanwhile, the 10-year Treasury bond yielded 4.55%, and the two-year bond was at 4.15%. The CME Group's FedWatch tool‘s projections show markets pricing a 98.2% likelihood of the Federal Reserve leaving the current interest rates unchanged during June’s meeting.

Financial results for the fourth quarter and fiscal year reflect the divestiture of certain Sweet Baked Snacks value brands on March 3, 2025, and the divestiture of the Voortman^® business on December 2, 2024. All comparisons are to the fourth quarter of the prior fiscal year, unless otherwise noted.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Fourth Quarter Highlights

Net sales for the quarter was $2.3 billion, an increase of $124.3 million, or 6 percent. Net sales excluding the divestiture and foreign currency exchange increased 6 percent.
Net income per diluted share was $3.64 in the quarter. Adjusted earnings per share was $2.77, an increase of 20 percent.
Cash provided by operations for the quarter was $579.2 million compared to $393.9 million in the prior year.

Net Sales

Net sales increased $124.3 million, or 6 percent. Excluding $5.1 million of noncomparable net sales in the prior year related to the divestiture of certain Sweet Baked Snacks value brands and $3.1 million of favorable foreign currency exchange, net sales increased $126.3 million, or 6 percent.

The increase in comparable net sales reflects a 10 percentage point increase from net price realization, primarily driven by higher net pricing for coffee and sweet baked goods. Comparable net sales also reflects a 4 percentage point decrease from volume/mix, primarily driven by decreases for coffee and sweet baked goods, partially offset by an increase for Uncrustables^® sandwiches.

Operating Income

Gross profit increased $38.8 million, or 5 percent. The increase primarily reflects higher net price realization, partially offset by higher costs, inclusive of commodity costs and tariffs, and unfavorable volume/mix. Operating income increased $1,043.6 million, primarily reflecting the lapping of noncash impairment charges related to the goodwill of the Sweet Baked Snacks reporting unit and Hostess^® brand trademark in the prior year, the increase in gross profit, and a decrease in selling, distribution, and administrative ("SD&A") expenses.

Adjusted gross profit increased $31.1 million, or 4 percent. The difference between adjusted gross profit and generally accepted accounting principles ("GAAP") results reflects the exclusion of the change in net cumulative unallocated derivative gains and losses and special project costs. Adjusted operating income increased $59.7 million, or 14 percent, which further reflects the exclusion of amortization expense, noncash impairment charges related to the goodwill of the Sweet Baked Snacks reporting unit and Hostess^® brand trademark, the net pre-tax gain on divestitures in the prior year, and other special project costs as compared to GAAP operating income.

Interest Expense and Income Taxes

Net interest expense decreased $6.3 million, primarily due to reduced debt outstanding as compared to the prior year.

The effective income tax rate was (18.5) percent, compared to (4.6) percent in the prior year. The current year effective income tax rate reflects the cumulative unfavorable impact of the goodwill impairment charge recognized in the third quarter for the Sweet Baked Snacks reporting unit, which was included in the annual effective income tax rate and impacts the effective income tax rate in the fourth quarter. Additionally, the prior year effective income tax rate included the unfavorable impact of the goodwill impairment charge for the Sweet Baked Snacks reporting unit, partially offset by the deferred tax impact of favorable state legislative changes. These impacts were excluded from the adjusted effective income tax rate for each respective fiscal year. The adjusted effective income tax rate was 24.5 percent, compared to 23.9 percent in the prior year reflecting unfavorable state income tax impacts in the current year.

Cash Flow and Debt

Cash provided by operating activities was $579.2 million, compared to $393.9 million in the prior year, primarily reflecting an increase in net income adjusted for noncash items, a decrease in cash used for income and other taxes, and less cash required to fund working capital. Free cash flow was $483.9 million, compared to $298.9 million in the prior year, reflecting the increase in cash provided by operating activities. Net cash outflows related to debt were $370.5 million.

("ADF" or the "Corporation") (TSX: DRX), a North American leader in the fabrication of steel superstructures, recorded revenues of $99.3 million during the first quarter ended April 30, 2026, compared with $55.5 million for the same period a year ago.

Gross margin, as a percentage of revenues ⁽¹⁾ went from 22.0% for the 3-month period ended April 30, 2025, to 24.2% for the same period ended April 30, 2026.

Revenues in the first quarter ended a year ago on April 30, 2025, were negatively impacted by uncertainty related to new U.S. tariffs. Although this situation persists, the recently signed contracts have a positive impact on revenues in the current quarter. In addition, the increase in margins, in dollar terms and as a percentage of revenues, is explained by the increase in revenues, which improves the absorption of fixed costs, despite the increase in inputs, including the price of steel and recent changes in tariffs.

Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (adjusted EBITDA) ⁽²⁾for the 3-month period ended April 30, 2026, stood at $18.5 million or 18.6% of revenues compared with $10.4 million or 18.7% of revenues as at April 30, 2025.

For the first quarter ended April 30, 2026, ADF recorded net income of $12.0 million ($0.42 per basic and diluted share) compared with net income of $8.7 million ($0.30 per share, basic and diluted) a year earlier.

The Corporation's order backlog ⁽¹⁾ stood at $645.8 million as at April 30, 2026, compared with $561.1 million as at January 31, 2026. The order backlog as at April 30, 2026, includes the order backlog of Groupe LAR totaling $266.5 million, which was added pursuant to the closing of the acquisition on September 18, 2025, and does not include the option to extend the contract announced on July 23, 2025, by five (5) years. Excluding the long-term contracts announced in July 2025 and April 2026, the majority of the order backlog on hand as of April 30, 2026, will extend until the end of fiscal 2028.

As at April 30, 2026, the Corporation had a working capital ⁽¹⁾of $111.9 million, whereas the operating activities generated liquidities of $10.1 million in cash during the 3-month period ended April 30, 2026, closing the same quarter with cash and cash equivalents of $62.1 million.
