Whether Google Inc GOOGL is the dominating player in the search engine space because it squeezes out competitors from the game or because consumers love it might be a topic for a debate. However, what’s not a topic for the debate is the EU’s love for forming regulations and laws that makes it a little difficult for companies to operate.

Since most people on the Street don;t even know why EU is launching a crusade against Google, Bloomberg recently got Jamie Drucker, an intellectual property lawyer and Associate at Berwin Leighton Paisner, to explain what's driving this action against Google.

"It's not the first time that the European commission has looked at imposing penalties on large U.S. tech firms," Drucker said. "Few years ago Microsoft was in the crosshairs. I think, when you look at the way EU sees big organizations such as Google and Microsoft and Yahoo, is that they may be attempting to challenge their dominance for a number of reasons – economic, political."

"One of the reasons might probably be that the U.S. firms have been so successful in this area, have grown their businesses in such a dramatic way in a fairly deregulated Internet economy that the European competitors are really struggling to keep up and so this might be seen by some as an attempt to give the European companies a chance to catch up."

On whether this move is political, Drucker said, "It has to always be seen in a political context. There's some very large trade deal currently being negotiated between the EU and the U.S. There is a lot of political discussions."
