It was all good just a week ago, as CNN Money’s “Fear & Greed” Index gave the markets a grade of “Greed,” indicating the markets were confident.

In fact, the scale, which ranges from Extreme Fear to Extreme Greed, reached Extreme Greed on Thursday as investors seemed to be assuming that Britain would remain in the European Union and everything would be business as usual.

As the entire world has been reminded of repeatedly since Friday, that’s not the way things went. The Fear & Greed Index tracks seven indicators of investor sentiment and suggests an emotion that is “driving” market activity. It may be reassuring that, according to the index, Fear was the prevailing emotion at this time exactly a year ago, when Brexit was hardly a blip on anyone’s radar.
